El Emisario dive site: marine life and a forgotten pipeline off Playa Blanca
Just a short boat ride from Dive College Lanzarote in Playa Blanca lies one of the most accessible and surprising dive sites in the south of Lanzarote: El Emisario. This location is perfect for all diving levels—from beginners getting their first experience to advanced divers looking for a relaxed exploration with rich marine life.
The dive site takes its name from an old, no longer functioning pipeline that stretches along the seabed. Originally part of the local infrastructure, it now serves as an artificial reef. Over time, marine organisms have colonized the structure, turning it into a vibrant hub of underwater activity. The pipeline provides shelter, shadow, and food for many species, making it an ideal subject for underwater photography.
You can expect to see a large variety of fish around the pipeline and on the sandy seabed that surrounds it. Shoals of bream, wrasse, and barracuda move through the area, while rays often glide past silently. In the sand, you have a real chance of encountering angelsharks, a fascinating species that rests partially buried and camouflaged during the day.
The dive reaches depths of around 18 to 20 meters, with calm conditions and generally excellent visibility. The combination of a flat bottom, mild currents, and plenty of marine life makes El Emisario a favorite among both training dives and leisure dives.
This site is not only biologically rich but also tells a quiet story about the relationship between human structures and natural adaptation. The transformation of the pipeline into an underwater habitat shows how marine ecosystems respond to change—creating life where once there was only concrete and metal.
Whether you’re just beginning your diving journey or have logged hundreds of dives, El Emisario offers a rewarding and peaceful experience just minutes from the harbor of Playa Blanca.
